3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley

Your journey begins early in the morning as we depart from Marrakech, heading towards the majestic High Atlas Mountains. As we ascend, you will witness breathtaking landscapes and traditional Berber villages scattered along the mountainside. We will drive through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), the highest mountain pass in Morocco, offering stunning panoramic views.

Our first major stop is the Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most well-preserved ksars (fortified villages) in Morocco. This ancient village has been featured in numerous films and TV shows, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Here, you’ll have time to explore the kasbah’s narrow alleyways, visit local artisan shops, and climb to the top for a stunning view of the surrounding valley.

After lunch (not included), we continue our journey to Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Desert.” This city is home to Taourirt Kasbah and the famous Atlas Film Studios, where many Hollywood movies have been filmed. A short stop here allows you to take photos and explore the historic kasbah if desired.

Next, we drive through the scenic Roses Valley, known for its fragrant rose fields and annual Rose Festival. The journey continues into the Dades Valley, a region famous for its dramatic rock formations and lush oases. We arrive in Dades Gorge in the late afternoon, where you will enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner and spend the night in a comfortable hotel or riad.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga (Sahara Desert)

After breakfast at the hotel, we drive towards the stunning Todra Gorge, one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural wonders. The gorge features towering limestone cliffs reaching up to 300 meters, making it a popular destination for hikers and rock climbers. You’ll have time to explore the gorge, take breathtaking photos, and enjoy a short walk along the river.

We then continue towards Erfoud, a town famous for its fossil workshops and lively market. If you’re interested, we can stop at a fossil museum where you can learn about the region’s ancient marine history and even purchase unique fossilized souvenirs.

In the afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes, Morocco’s most famous section of the Sahara Desert. Here, you will experience one of the most iconic Moroccan adventures: a camel trek across the golden dunes. As you ride your camel, you will witness the mesmerizing colors of the desert change as the sun sets over the horizon.

Upon arrival at your luxury desert camp, you will be greeted with traditional mint tea and have time to relax before dinner. Enjoy an authentic Berber dinner under the starry sky, accompanied by local music and drumming around the campfire. For those seeking adventure, you can also try sandboarding down the dunes. Spend the night in a beautifully decorated tent equipped with modern comforts, offering an unforgettable desert experience.

Day 3: Merzouga – Draa Valley – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

Wake up early to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the dunes, an unforgettable sight as the golden sands glow under the morning light. After breakfast at the camp, you have the option to enjoy an ATV quad biking experience (not included) for an exhilarating ride across the dunes.

We then begin our return journey, passing through the vast Draa Valley, home to Morocco’s longest river and a landscape filled with thousands of palm trees, ancient kasbahs, and traditional Berber villages. This region is known for its rich history, as it was once a key trading route connecting Morocco to sub-Saharan Africa.

As we continue, we pass through several small towns and make a stop in Ouarzazate for a break. You may choose to have lunch here or explore more of the city’s famous landmarks.

Crossing the High Atlas Mountains once again, we make our way back to Marrakech, arriving by late afternoon or early evening. Your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad, marking the end of an incredible three-day journey through Morocco’s most stunning landscapes.
